Chapter 4

It’s been five days now. Five lonely days. Sarah has been gone for that long. When is she coming back? I miss her… For the past five days I had been trying to ignore the boredom without Sarah’s existence. Everyday I walk home on my own, ate whatever Mum cooked before she left for work and off to study I went. With the spare time I had, I dominated games on my computer, yet again. Killing and annihilating monsters wasn’t fun anymore.

Late at night, I scrolled through my bag. Finding a large stack of papers, I took it out from the bag. The papers had Sarah’s name on it. I had been taking Sarah’s homework home everyday, hoping she would return the next day. But it never happened. She wouldn’t be back tomorrow either I guess. So, I dumped Sarah’s set of papers on the table. I’ll just return to her when she’s back. No point for me bringing it to school when she never comes.

It’s ten at night. It’s bed time. Sarah, wherever you are, I hope you’re enjoying. Cause I’m suffering here. Enjoy while you still can.

I’d like to see the look on your face when you see this pile of homework. Hehe. Teacher wants it done in two days. You’re so screwed, Sarah. Can’t wait. Hehe. I smiled myself to sleep.

After taking a long bath, I decided to catch “South Park” for a while. It’s one of the most ‘educating’ programs around. If you know what I mean… Always good for a laugh. I laid down on the sofa, remote in my hands and began channel surfing. I wanted to check other channels to see if there were anything better. Hmm, “Scarface” on channel 11… “National Geographic” on channel 23… “Basic…” Eeeww, it’s an adult movie! Switch, switch!

And overall, there was absolutely nothing better than “South Park”.

Laughing was something I enjoy. It signifies the joy you get from doing something. In this case, cute cartoons mouthing vulgar words in every sentence. Pretty evil for an 8 year old huh… Heh heh.

Suddenly, the sound of a loud vehicle engine dying outside caught my attention. It’s most probably Ms. Allen’s car again. That old, pile of junk was her treasure. She wouldn’t even sell it for a million bucks. What a pity old lady. Assuming that, I chose to ignore the vehicle and concentrate on the screen in front of me.

And then, someone knocked the door. It gave me a shock. It’s four in the noon, it couldn’t be Mum nor Dad. Their work ends at six. It couldn’t be our neighbours. They hardly come around at this hour. It couldn’t be anyone. Yet there was someone.

The doorbell began to ring continuously. Whoever’s out there sure enjoys toying with the doorbell.

Could it be burglars? Ringing the bell to confirm that no one was in the house? Don’t think so. This was a crime-free neighbourhood.

I decided to open the front door. If it was my time to die and the person standing out there happened to be Grim Reaper, I’ll accept it.

Bravely, I swung open the door. Took a look outside and saw no one. Could it be a ghost? Oh no. I took a step back and looked out the side window. Hmm, is that a black SUV in front of Sarah’s house? I see. I had an evil plan.

I took one step out the door. Pretending to be afraid.

“He… Hello? Is an…anyone th..there?”

And then I pushed the door wide open with all my might. It did not swing open all the way, of course. Sarah had been behind it all the while, waiting for an opportunity to frighten me. Well, obviously her plan failed. Muahaha. She was screaming for help.

I stopped and moved towards the back of the door.

“Sarah, don’t you think that’s stupid? Trying to trick me?” That was me, pretending to be macho.

“Aww man… I thought it would work…” Sarah stopped screaming and replied disappointedly.

“Hehe…” I put on my usual wide, innocent smile.

“So, did you do what I told you to?”

“Yea, yea… Finished everything.. What about my souvenir?” I raised my eyebrow and dropped it a few times.

Slowly, her hand reached for her pocket and pulled out… a WHAT!! A cracked transparent cubic.

“Here’s your souvenir. Sorry, if it wasn’t for the door, it would’ve been in perfect condition.” It was an insult, clearly directed to me.

I took a look at the glittering cubicle. I held it in my hands, my heart broken into pieces.

“It was special made… Your name is up there… See? Ke (crack) Vin.” Sarah explained.

I wanted to cry at the moment. Pretending to be smart, I actually crushed my souvenir. A souvenir with my name on it. T.T

For the whole evening, me and Sarah sat opposite to each other, staring at the cubicle. Figuring out ways of returning it to its normal state. It’s definitely a Mission Impossible. After thinking for quite a while, Sarah headed back home to unpack her things. Sitting around doing nothing but thinking doesn’t really help, Sarah said. True though.

At night, we decided to chat at nine.

“Don’t worry, we’ll figure out a way to fix it.” Sarah tried to comfort me.

“I don’t think it’s possible…”

“Nevermind then, if I ever go again, I’ll get you a new one.” Sarah’s always so optimistic.

“Thanks, Sarah.”

“Sure, no problem…” Sarah smiled. “So, for the past six days… Erm, how has it been?”

I thought for a while before answering.

“One word --------- fun.”

“Oh, I see…” Her gloomy face appeared.

“Another word -------- boring.”

“Oh, haha!” She seemed happier this time round.

“Ok, enough about that. How was your trip?”

“It was so cool.”

( Conversation about the trip that Sarah had which the author, me, never knew. Because I had been focusing too much on Kevin. My bad, sorry. XD )

“Anyway it’s getting late. I gotta sleep. Nites!” Sarah mentioned.

“Ok sure. Good night, Sarah.”

“Wait, I can’t help but think that you’ve forgotten something very important.”

“Well, whatever it is, I’m sure it can wait till tomorrow…”

“You’re right. Hehe. Nites…”

“Ok, sleep tight Sarah.”

I shut the window and made my way to the bathroom. One last leak before going to bed. Before I turned off the lights, I noticed a big stack of paper laying on my table. Whatever it is on my table, I’ll sort it out tomorrow… I yawned and dimmed the lights. I rolled onto my bed and closed my eyes. Time to get some rest. It felt like the emptiness in my heart had been gone. For once I’ll have a good nights rest. How nice.

Yaaawwwnn…. Wait! Oh no! Sarah’s homework! Yikes!

Chapter 3

I took a stroll along the sidewalk of Heart Lane on my way home from school. I whistled the whole journey, in a way of expressing my joy without the disturbance and annoyance from Sarah. It’s like the summer holidays have arrived. The cloud looks bright, the wind was blowing my way and the birds were chirping away. Life was stunning.

I passed by Sarah’s house. It was empty now. It’s been a day since she had left. Oh boy, have I ever tasted freedom as sweet as this. Ha ha. I stared at the garden outside where we would use to play hide and seek. The green green grass providing us the comfort of running around without worries of falling down and injuring ourselves. The open, free space where we would often spend our time together under the rising moon.

“You’ll never catch me, Kevin…” Sarah shouted.

“Wait till I get hold of you, you brat!” I spoke, breathless.

I pretended of suffering from asthma and fell down to the ground. Attracting her attention so she would come nearer. I put on a great show, fooling her completely.

“What’s wrong? Kevin?” Sarah was worried now.

“Argh…” And then I tried my best to breathe like I was in my deathbed.

Just a few steps closer. A few more steps… When her legs moved within hands reach, I grabbed her leg, frightening her for a moment. She shrieked for a while, unable to adapt to the changes yet.

“Got ya…” I smiled cheekily.

“You… Evil…” Before ending that sentence, she chased me down the street, caught me and gave me a hard pinch on the arm. It hurt, but that’s what you get when you mess around with Sarah.

When we were tired, we just laid down on the grass, staring up at the darkening sky. It was, somewhat comfortable…

A gust of cold breeze woke me up from my daydream. I smacked myself in the face, smiling for a moment. Why am I thinking of this now? Gotta get home and finish my homework. I walked back into my house without giving Sarah’s house another glance. She’s just been away for a day. She’ll be back soon. Better enjoy what I have for the time being.

I let out a sigh of relief. I’ve finished my homework. I’m free… I closed my book, shoved my pencil back into the pencil case and decided to head for bed. I had been rather tired that day and decided to turn off the lightings with my eraser. The switch had been a bit lose, the slightest impact would trigger it and switch it off. I played my chances, aimed and fired my eraser.

One shot was all it took to change the once bright-litted room into darkness where monsters such as the Boogie Man were told to roam around. At 8 years old, I’ve never believed in such meaningless and unproven things. Maybe it’s the scientific mind that I inherited from my dad.

After flipping around on the bed for a few minutes, it wasn’t hard to tell that I couldn’t sleep yet. I stared up at the ceiling. Staring aimlessly, hoping for something exciting to happen. An explosion, fireworks, nuclear war, anything… I was bored.

I had an idea, I slid open my window, took the small rounded stones that I had gathered and threw towards Sarah’s window. After wasting four to five stones, I remembered that she wasn’t there anymore. Well, not for a few days, at least.

I looked up in the sky. The stars were blinking exceptionally bright and the moon was as round as possible. Yet again, I found myself looking towards the moon, looking for a reason of the feeling that I was getting then.

I can’t believe Sarah forced me to help her pack her clothings. The first step I took into the room, I almost fell because of the piling amount of clothes lying on the floor. Apparently, she had trouble picking clothes to bring and decided to ask me for my opinion. Girls are such a fuss. I said beautiful to everything dress and blouse she pointed to me. I just wanted everything to finish fast so I could go back home.

After three hours of packing, me and Mum were standing outside on the garden, spending the last few minutes with Sarah’s family before they left. Sarah was sitting at the back seat of the black SUV. Obviously, her Mum had disapproved of her sitting on the front seat knowing her attitude. Smart move, Miss Connor.

Both our parents were exchanging their last few words. Me and Sarah were exchanging comments and orders to each other.

“While I’m gone, take care…” Sarah spoke to me nicely.

“While you’re there, get me a souvenir…” I replied.

“Remember to take vegetables.”

“Remember, souvenir…”

“Hey, help me make sure that no animals shit in our garden.”

“Souvenir, important.”

“I’ll get you your freaking souvenir!” Sarah had been annoyed. Nice move, Kevin. I make myself proud at times.

“Then, I’ll do everything that you had just listed.” I smiled, crossing fingers behind my back.

“Hey Kevin, you sure you do not want to join us?” offered Mr Connor once again.

I sincerely shook my head in disagreement, smiling, thinking that I’d only go if I have a death wish. I can’t imagine the torture I’d get from Sarah if I’m going with them. I’m not risking anything. I value my life more than anything.

I enjoyed the second the SUV accelerated and within seconds had removed themselves out of my sight. I am FREE! I’ll never miss her… Ha ha.

Well, that’s not how it is now. Haiz. Maybe it would be a bit torturing if she had been here, but she also brings joy and entertainment. She’s always there when you needed a friend. At least for me. It’s like buying a house, where it brings you comfort but could be the primary target of burglars. Everything has its pros and cons. So does Sarah. But she makes a great company.

I hate to admit it. I really hate to.

But I sure wished she was here right this moment.

Chapter 2

I returned home to a warm welcome by both my parents. I was tired to the bones. Ms. Granger sent both me and Sarah to detention right after school. Both of us had to stay back until 4.30pm to clean up the classroom. Sarah had received her benefits for being a female. Obviously, Ms. Granger looks at us with prejudice. Compared to Sarah who handed up her homework every single day, I was among one of the laziest pupils any teacher ever had.

For detention, all Sarah had to do was to sweep the floor, while I had to mop the floor and clean the aquarium. All the way home, Sarah laughed and teased at me. I chose to keep my mouth shut, to prevent any unforeseen, disadvantaging outcome.

It was a big relief to arrive home. Away from Sarah. Away from my misery. In moments, I had finished my bath and was sitting on the dining table, prepared to feast. Before our meal, dad chose to say grace.

“Thank you, Lord, for this meal upon our table…”

“And that Sarah isn’t here now…” I added in.

“Kevin!” Mum raised her tone.

“Amen…” I cut her off.

After the meal, I headed back into my bedroom. It had already been around 9pm and I was exhausted. An early sleep would do me some good. I switched off the lights and rested myself on the bed. Tucking myself under the warmth of the blanket. I closed my eyes, ready to set my mind free and loose. But I never had the chance.

I could hear rocks being thrown at my window. Oh hell. I’m freaking tired. Give me a break…

I sat up and slid open the window right next to my bed. Wham! A rock hit me right in the face. It was really painful, knocked me right in the forehead. I rubbed my forehead with palm and started to curse right outside my window.

“Damn it, Sarah!” I yelled. “That really hurt, you know…”

“Sorry…” Sarah responded by waving her hand in notion of apology.

I can’t believe she’s waking me up now, after a full day of unpaid work on cleaning up the room. I can’t believe why she had to take that room of all the other luxurious, better rooms.

Our parents were best mates since their college days. They’ve been through everything, poverty, marriage, pregnancy… They even bought a new house next to each other. But the bummer fact is that they have a daughter who has the mind of a boy. We grew up together. We did many things together, so I know. She’s a boy in a female body. That’s for sure. I mentioned to her a few times before, but never once has she changed. Ignorance isn’t a bliss in her case. She had to choose a room directly opposite mine to disturb me from my sleep. Very often I have to accompany her for a moment of conversation, to keep up with our lives. When we live next to each other, study in the same class and even spend most of our free time together. Under all these circumstances she still had to have night chats with me. When we were small kids, we promised to have chats in the night when we’re bored.

Ever since then, Sarah has kept a huge pile of stones beside her bed. In case she ever gets bored, which she always were.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“I want to chat…”

“Do you know how tired I am?” I pretended to close my eyelids halfway to show that I was too tired to chat. “Good night…” and I laid back down on my bed.

“Come on… Just for 10 minutes… Please?” She made it sound so nice. Like it would have been wrong not to chat with her.

“Fine, just 10 minutes. No longer.” I said, followed by a sigh.

“Thanks. Hey, you think that Randall ever ate the frog like he said he did?”

“I bet you not.”

“How’re you so sure? Have you ever tasted one?”

“No, I’m not sure. Why don’t you ask him yourself?”

“Fine, I’ll ask him tomorrow..”

“Great..”

She paused because she ran out of ideas for our conversation. I was just too tired to start one and was prepared to answer all her questions. And then she broke the golden moment of silence.

“Do you like Ashley?”

“No, I don’t…”

“Yes, you do. You keep staring at her in class…”

“I was looking outside the window…”

“Come on, admit it.”

“Fine, I like her. I’ll tell her that tomorrow. Maybe we’d even go out on a date.”

“No, no. Fine. Just ignore what I had said.”

“Why are you jealous?”

“No. Why should I be jealous?” Sarah’s face had turned red.

“Why not?” I asked cheekily.

“Good night…” Sarah changed the subject.

“Alright. Get some rest, Sarah.”

I rested my head on the pillow. I left the window open, the night was cooling and I loved the breeze. Finally, a chance to get some…

“Oh yeah, hey, Kevin?”

“Yeah, what?”

“I’m going to the riverside for a few days next week.”

“Ok, happy holidays… Buy me a gift. A souvenir. Remember…”

“Don’t miss me, ya.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll miss you.” In a negative way, though.

“Good night, Kev.”

“Nites, Sarah.” I shaked my head. Ten minutes up. Time to sleep.

What great news… She’s leaving. A few days of freedom. Hooray. Finally, I get to escape from her clutches. Now, to get some good rest and doze off.

And the last thing that came up on my mind was one sentence, two words or twelve letters…

GOOD RIDDANCE!

Chapter 1

“Son… It’s time to wake up!” I woke up to the hearing of my mom yelling.

Aww man, just a few more minutes… Just give me a few…(yawn).. more minutes… Just a few… more… The sandman had taken me away. Bringing me to dreamland once again. How nice if I could stay here forever, without worries, being kept safe all the time. It’s Monday, another school day. I had spent too much time and interest on the movie the night before. As usual, I had slept late and now it’s taking its toll on me. Now, let me introduce myself. My name is…

BANG!!

The sound of my bedroom door’s impact against the wall had woken me up. But nevertheless, I remained stationary, keeping my eyes closed. It’s probably Mum… Caught unaware, I felt sheer pain when my ears were being pulled. It really hurt a lot. I can’t believe my Mum would do such a thing.

I turned around as soon as she let go of my poor left ear. I opened my eyes, frowning, prepared to yell at Mum. I sat up and stared right at her. Right at, Sarah? Why on Earth is she in my room? I looked right at her, giving her a curious look. She just glanced back at me while frowning only an eyebrow. She placed both her arms on her waist.

“We’re going to be late for bus…” Sarah said.

I remained staring blankly at her, next at my legs, then back to her. I quickly covered my bottom half with the blanket. Jesus, I’m still in my boxers.

“Sarah, get out!” I pointed towards the door, asking her to leave.

“You’d better…”

“Yes! Yes! I’ll get dressed now…” I cut her off.

“Ok, see you… SOON!” She had raised her tone upon ending her sentence.

As soon as the door closed, I jumped out of my bed and dashed to the toilet. I started brushing while changing into my uniform. I still can’t believe Mum would just let her into my room like that. How many times has it been this month? 10 times? Drops of toothpaste foam dropped unto the floor and my shirt. Feeling frustrated, I wiped it off with my thumb.

On my way walking down the stairs, I could smell the sweet aroma of pancakes. Mum must have made them for breakfast. Mum makes the best pancakes in the world. I reached the kitchen, finding Sarah sitting on MY FAVOURITE CHAIR eating MY PANCAKES…

Grumpily, I sat opposite her staring at her as she gulped down the glass of milk dear Mum had provided her with. I hope she chokes. Mum came and placed a plate in front of me and appointed me to finish the remaining balance of the pancakes. I look at the plate between me and Sarah. Just 1 piece left. 1 piece left. I slowly raised my head and noticed Sarah staring at the pancake.

She smiled at me. The plate was obviously closer to her. That’s such a disadvantage for me. She was still smiling at me, informing me of her win over the last piece of pancake. Well, if it’s a fight you want, LET THERE BE WAR!!

We both raised our spoon and forks. Preparing for the battle of that one piece of pancake. Unexpectedly, she pointed behind me and shouted, “The bus has arrived…”

Nervous of getting late again, I turned back, seeking confirmation of the arrival of the school bus. Sarah had tricked me, but this wasn’t the first time. I had learnt from my previous lesson. Using my fork, I had poked the pancake before Sarah could reach it. I smiled at her.

“Looks like it’s mine now…” Victory tastes so sweet… I started scooping syrup to accompany my pancake.

But before I could lift the pancake onto my plate, Sarah spitted on the pancake. Staring at disgust of the saliva on the last piece of pancake, I could taste defeat. Wait, no, she may have won the battle, but she hasn’t won the war!!

I spat back onto the pancake. There, settled. The war has ended and I had lost. I had forgotten. Sarah had finished a piece or two before fighting with me for the last piece. A pancake wasted in the end. With my stomach growling all the way. What a morning. How eventful. How worse could things get?

The honking of the bus frightened the both of us. The bus is here. We ran to the front door, and slotted our feet into our shoes. Sarah finished hers in an instant whereas I had to untie to loosen the shoes for my feet to fit.

“We’ll be late, wear it on the bus!” Sarah told me nervously.

“Don’t worry, it won’t leave…” I shot her a don’t-worry look. Reassuring her that the bus had no reason to leave without the both of them. “Patience is a virtue.”

And as soon as we made our first step out the door, the bus sped off. Staring upon the departure of the big yellow bus, I couldn’t help but feel stunned. The bus left without us. I turned to face Sarah, who now has a don’t-say-anything look all over her face. I nodded in guilt. Whispering, “Silence is golden.”

I paused for a moment. Refreshing my brain so that it was able to interpret what had just occurred.

Looking back at where the bus used to be a minute ago, I spoke, this time with a higher tone...

“Well, I’ll be damned…”

“Thank you, Miss Aright.” Sarah thanked my Mum.

The three of us, me, my Mum and Sarah were on our way to school in my Mum’s car. We were definitely going to be late. We had missed the bus and asked Mum for assistance. I had thought of calling in sick and skip school for the day. But no, Sarah had to tell Mum about the assignment. What a great deal of help.

“No problem, I’m sorry my son had made you late,” my mum apologised.

“It’s ok. As long as he gets punished…” Sarah replied with a sinister smile.

Feeling down, I supported my head with my arm and stared out the window, thinking, Sarah will be the cause of my funeral. I might die young, thanks to her. I would love to be away from her. Far away, not in sight. That would be a hell of a relief.

Before long, Mum dropped us at the gates of Springfield Elementary. What seemed like eternity inside the car, listening to their conversation, had ended. Upon entering the front steps of the school, the bell rung. That was a sign, a sign that we’ve been late for class. Me and Sarah exchanged glances, she was smiling and I was sulking. Punishment. Judgement for arriving at an inappropriate and inaccurate time when lessons have begun had been waiting for me.
